Ned Schwing said in his reference book over the Design 1890 & 1906 that Winchester commenced proof marking them in 1908… I don't know if that is certainly accurate, but will believe that it is. The “WP” evidence mark was used following the barrel and receiver were being mated, assembled Winchester gun shop product reviews and completed. This is very evident to the firearms produced during the late teens by early 30s when the blue flaked (popped) off if the evidence was struck within the receiver body.
